What Hat Yai Offers — Overview

Most visitors come to Hat Yai to eat and shop, then leave — but within 30 km of downtown there's far more to see. Think of it as four zones:

In-Town Zone — 4 Spots Within a 15-Minute Ride

1. Hat Yai Municipal Park + Cable Car

The city's number-one landmark — a large park on the slopes of Kho Hong hill. At the viewpoint stands the golden standing Buddha (Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj), overlooking the entire city; the light at sunset is superb. A cable car links the hilltops (runs in rounds, mostly weekends and holidays — check schedules before going). Park entry is free.

2. Wat Hat Yai Nai — Giant Reclining Buddha

An old temple by the U-Tapao canal housing one of southern Thailand's largest reclining Buddhas, roughly 35 metres long. Locals come to pray for health and career luck, and you can walk beneath the statue — believed to bring good fortune. Only ~3 km from the city centre.

3. Kim Yong Market — The Souvenir Legend

For shoppers — Central Festival is the biggest mall in southern Thailand with brands, restaurants, and a cinema. Meanwhile the Lee Garden / Sanehanusorn Road area is the city's beating heart: famous food shops, the best money changers, and the night food stalls all sit within a few hundred metres.

5. Klong Hae Floating Market — the South's First Floating Market

The attraction visitors love most. Vendors sell food from boats along the canal, served in bamboo tubes and clay pots instead of foam boxes — local Thai and Thai-Muslim dishes plus old-school desserts from ฿20-50 per item. Open Friday-Sunday only, ~15:00-21:00. Arrive before 17:00 to grab a canal-side seat.

6. Greenway Night Market — the Trendy One

Hat Yai's favourite night market for the young crowd — street food of every kind, new and secondhand fashion, handmade goods, with a vibe similar to Bangkok's train markets. Perfect for an after-dinner stroll; open evenings until around 22:00-23:00.

8. Ton Nga Chang Waterfall — 7 Tiers in a Wildlife Sanctuary

Songkhla's most beautiful waterfall, ~26 km from downtown (40-50 min drive). Of its 7 tiers, the favourite is tier 3, "Ton Nga Chang", where the water splits into two streams like elephant tusks. The hike up from the car park takes 20-30 minutes. Water is fullest late rainy season (Oct-Dec). Go in the morning, wear grippy shoes, and bring a change of clothes.

9. Songkhla Old Town — Nang Ngam Road + Street Art

~30 km from Hat Yai: rows of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafes in heritage buildings, street art down whole streets, and local specialties like frozen-egg ice cream, charcoal-steamed buns, and kiat fang stewed-pork rice. 10. Samila Beach — the Golden Mermaid

Hat Yai has no beach, but a 40-45 minute drive brings you to Samila Beach, marked by its golden mermaid statue. Casuarina trees give shade and you can rent picnic mats. Best in the late afternoon — watch the sunset, then head back to sleep in Hat Yai.
