Why Hat Yai Is a Better Temple City Than Expected

Most people come to Hat Yai to eat and shop — morning dim sum, Kim Yong Market, Lee Garden Plaza, then home. But Hat Yai is a surprisingly rewarding city for temple visits, mainly because nearly every significant site sits within 10 km of the centre. You don't lose a whole day to driving the way you do in many Thai provinces.

What sets the city apart is how many traditions sit side by side. Theravada Thai temples, a Mahayana Chinese temple, a Guan Yin shrine, a four-faced Brahma shrine and the mosques of the Thai-Malay community are all a few kilometres apart — a fair reflection of a city built by Thai, Chinese and Malay communities together.

For visitors from Malaysia and Singapore, especially Chinese-heritage families, a temple round is one of the top reasons to cross the border after food. Many come once a year around Chinese New Year or the vegetarian festival.

8 Temples and Shrines Worth Visiting

1. Wat Hat Yai Nai (Wat Mahattamangkalaram) — the reclining Buddha

The stop every tour bus makes, and the city's defining image. The reclining Buddha, Phra Buddha Hattamongkol, is about 35 m long and 15 m high — among the largest in the world. The base houses a hall of ashes and Buddha images you can walk through.

• Location: Phetkasem Road — about 4-5 km from Lee Garden
• Hours: roughly 06:00-20:00 daily
• Entry: free (donations welcome)
• Time needed: 30-40 minutes
• Tip: arrive before 09:00, ahead of the first coaches

2. Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj — the standing Buddha on the hill

A golden standing Buddha roughly 20 m tall, on a hilltop inside Hat Yai Municipal Park and visible from much of the city. It's also the best free city viewpoint in Hat Yai if you drive up yourself.

• Hours: park open roughly 05:00-20:00
• Entry: free (cable car charged separately)
• Time needed: 30 minutes

3. The Guan Yin shrine on Khao Kho Hong

A white Guan Yin figure in a Chinese-style pavilion, on a separate hilltop from the standing Buddha and connected by the cable car. This is the single most popular stop for Chinese, Malaysian and Singaporean visitors; expect crowds around Chinese New Year.

• Hours: roughly 08:00-18:00
• Offerings: incense, flowers, fruit (no meat)
• Time needed: 20-30 minutes

4. The Brahma shrine on Khao Kho Hong

A four-faced Brahma in the style of Bangkok's Erawan Shrine, at another cable car station. Visitors typically come with wishes about work and fortune, and pay respects at all four faces in turn — each representing loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity.

5. Wat Chue Chang — the Chinese temple downtown

An old Mahayana Chinese temple in the Niphat Uthit area, walkable from most city-centre hotels. It's the focal point of Hat Yai's vegetarian festival each October, when the whole neighbourhood fills with yellow flags and vegetarian food stalls.

• Location: Niphat Uthit area — 10-15 min walk from Lee Garden
• Hours: roughly 06:00-18:00
• Time needed: 20 minutes

6. Wat Khok Saman Khun

A royal temple in the city, far quieter and shadier than Wat Hat Yai Nai. Good if you want to pay respects without tour groups around; the chedi and ordination hall are architecturally worth the stop.

7. Wat Khlong Hae + Klong Hae Floating Market

8. The Hat Yai City Pillar Shrine

Small, but locally important and only about 15 minutes of your time — an easy stop on the way back into town. Many residents visit before starting a business or sitting an exam.

The Hill, the Cable Car and the Park

Hat Yai Municipal Park on Khao Kho Hong packs the most into one place: the standing Buddha, Guan Yin and the Brahma shrine, with a cable car linking three stations.

💡 Tip: With a group and a car, driving up is far cheaper. But if you're there for the view, the cable car wins — you see the whole city from above on the way. Check current operating hours first; it closes for maintenance periodically.

Full-Day Route Including Songkhla

With a full day, extend to Songkhla town — about 30 km, a 40-minute drive:

• Morning: Wat Hat Yai Nai + Khao Kho Hong (as above)
• Midday: drive to Songkhla, lunch in the old town on Nang Ngam Road
• Afternoon: Khao Tang Kuan — hilltop chedi with views over the lake and the gulf
• Late afternoon: Wat Matchimawat, Songkhla's historic central temple
• Evening: back to Hat Yai, or stop at Samila Beach first

Etiquette and What to Bring

Dress code

• Sleeves covering the shoulders; trousers or skirt covering the knees
• Slip-on shoes — you remove them before every ordination hall and vihara
• No tank tops, short shorts or beachwear

What to bring

• ฿20 notes and coins — many shrines can't give change and don't take QR
• Umbrella or hat — temple courtyards have little shade
• Water — especially if you walk up the hill
• A cloth bag for your shoes — you'll be taking them off often

What not to do

• Never point your feet at a Buddha image — sit with legs folded to the side
• Don't climb on statues for photos
• Keep your voice down; no music in temple grounds
• Women shouldn't hand items directly to a monk — place them on the receiving cloth
• Respect no-photography signs, common inside ordination halls

Where to Stay for a Temple Trip

This kind of itinerary means leaving early, returning mid-morning, then heading out again in the evening. That makes a central base worth much more than a cheaper room out of town.
