What these two places are

People often lump "the cable car and the reclining Buddha" together, but they are two separate sites on the western side of Hat Yai. Wat Hat Yai Nai holds the huge reclining Buddha and is free to enter. Hat Yai Municipal Park, on Khao Kho Hong hill, has the cable car and a hilltop Buddha. Both are roughly 4-6 km from the centre, a 15-20 minute drive, so one morning covers both.

This is a practical guide: how to get there, how long to allow, what to wear — and, importantly, the cable car has been closed for maintenance at times, so check before you go. We include a backup plan.

Wat Hat Yai Nai — the free highlight

The reclining Buddha is about 35 m long and 15 m high, among the largest in Thailand, with the soles decorated with the 108 auspicious marks. Standing in front of it you feel a scale photos don't capture.

  • Hours: grounds open roughly 6 AM-6 PM. Mornings are quiet and cool; before 9 on a weekday it is nearly empty.
  • Entry: free; donation boxes on site.
  • Dress code: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes at the pavilion.
  • Time needed: 30-45 minutes including photos and a short prayer.
  • Etiquette: don't point your feet toward the Buddha and keep voices low.

For more temples see our Hat Yai temple and merit-making guide.

The municipal park cable car

The cable car is a short ride up Khao Kho Hong (published figures say only a few minutes per trip), rewarding you with an aerial view of Hat Yai and Songkhla Lake on a clear day. The draw is the view, not the length — an easy, low-effort activity for families.

⚠️ Check before you go: the line has been closed for maintenance at times, and prices/hours differ by source (about ฿100 for Thai adults is commonly quoted; foreigner rates are higher). Call or check Hat Yai Municipality's page first. Figures here are the latest we could verify as of Oct 2026 — not a guarantee.

If it's closed, is the park still worth it?

Yes. The park opens early and a road leads to the viewpoints and the hilltop Buddha — good for a morning stroll or sunset. Bring drinking water.

A view of the whole city also helps first-timers understand Hat Yai's layout. See Top 10 things to do in Hat Yai for more.

Tips + what to check

  1. Check cable car status before leaving — one call saves a wasted trip.
  2. Go early — cooler, quieter, clearer views.
  3. Carry small cash — donations, tickets and drink stalls may be cash-first.
  4. Dress modestly from the start — no changing stop before the temple.
  5. Grab there, ask the driver to wait or rent a car — return rides from the hill are harder to find.
  6. Comfortable shoes — steps and slopes; older travellers can drive up instead of walking.
  7. Rainy season: go between showers — see Hat Yai in the rainy season for indoor backups.

Kami sertakan pelan sandaran.
